Music Showcase Event “Encore 8 Recap”
BY DEV GILLESPIE
“Encore is an independent show case for anyindependent artist to get there music off and get their artistry and showmanship off in a concert like setting,” Chris, the founder of Encore Music Group, explains as the team prepared to put on their eighth annual music show case. Encore 8 arrived this past Wednesday, August 14th at Terminal West in Atlanta and as expected to grow with each event, Encore 8 turned up a notch or two from Encore 7!
Hosted by radio personality Cory B and the ever so turnt up event host, Fort Knox, Encore 8 consisted of a diverse line up of independent artists looking to pursue their dreams on the Terminal West stage. With music by DJ Genuis and a building packed with hip hop enthusiast, Encore 8 had all the ingredients of a support filled, authentic hip hop show case. Roughly 15 contestants, 8 featured artist, this show’s “Spot light” artist and winner of Encore 7, Green Left Ent, and a brand new featured dance act added to the show, Encore 8 was set to make more independent hip hip history!
Encore 8′s show host Fort Knox set the energy level on 100 as he welcomed everyone in the building. With DJ Genuis keeping an up beat tempo on the 1′s and 2′s, Fort Knox ensured the audience, media, judges, and artists that this show will be live, everyone will be respected, and stressed the fact of all the opportunity and greatness in the building that needed to be taken advantage of. Wall flowers never prosper! With special guest judges Sarah West (A3C/SXSW), Justin Padron (Trinidad James’ Producer/Engineer), DJ Kelo (YMCMB), and Atlanta legend DJ Jelly seated on the second floor balcony, artists took the stage to battle it out for the Encore 8 winner title.
Each contestant took the stage for about 6 minutes or long enough to spit a song or two. Independent artist Prince Benard jumped the show off as independent artist Raphael concluded the contestant acts with each artist bringing a different flavor and vibe to the stage in between, however there can only be one winner. There was one artist that showed the judges that they had the total package as an artist and performer and that person is Kris J. Kris J will recieve an exclusive and tailored package deal provided by the Encore Music Group staff as well as earning the “Spot light” artist position for Encore 9.
Shout out to each contestant, as they all worked hard to become a part of Encore 8.
Encore Music Group introduced a featured dancing act to the show case for the first time and the turn out was just as great as the featured artist. The dance segment of the show was important to the staff and show as a whole because it opened new doors for different types of entertainment talent to be involved with the show and have their talent show cased as well. The dancing segment of the show seemed to liven up and surprise the audience giving the atmosphere a different kind of hype then you would recieve from just music. The dancers definetly added a new and entergetic feel to the show so keep your ears open for more dance opportunities with Encore Music Group in the future!
Along with the contestants there were serveral super talented featured artists that made Encore 8 a special experience. Sy Ari Da Kid took the stage and spit acappella with his “Versace” flow and it was clear from his first few bars that he had the crowd’s full attention. The dopest part about Sy Ari Da Kid’s set was his mention of Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” verse (where he called out numerous rappers and their rapping abilities) and the impact it is having on hip hop all the way from mainstream to underground rappers. He showed and shared his understanding that the verse wasn’t a diss, but friendly and needed competitiveness with in hip hop, just like every other artist at Encore 8 demonstrated that night. CJ Da Fly Guy, Earth Gang, Fat Baxx, and the lovely ladies Kissie Lee and Brooklynn also held it down as featured artists with great performances.
“Shows like these bring artists more experience. As a performer it’s easy to be in the studio, but as you perform practice makes perfect. It gives me more practice for my craft and you meet more people and get in touch with fans face to face as opposed to social media. I liked it,” singer and performer Brooklynn says when asked about her first experience performing with Encore.
With all of that being said, Encore 8 was a success for everyone involved! The pressure has officially been put on “music makers” to actually make music by newer artist Kendrick Lamar on his verse on Big Sean’s “Control” and I can honestly say the acts that performed at Encore 8 had some things to say and put on great performances. There was a lot of diversity in the building and I was pleased to see that no two acts were the same. What is admired most about Encore Music Group and their music show cases is that the atmosphere and vibe is always positive and supportive, yet still being treated with competitiveness. Encore 8 was a great show as well as a great time and opportunity for everyone in attendance. Encore 9 should be in the future of any independent artist looking to further their career and learn some of the ins and outs of this business! Check out the show sponsors below!
